Every type of plastic, PP included, suffers degradation if exposed to the weather for a long time. However, there are currently UV protection stabilizers (available as an optional item for Core Case products) which can be added to the feedstock when producing plastic boxes. Thoses substances protect the boxes and allow them to resist for a longer period of time.

Nevertheless, regardless of the feedstock (wood, metal, plastic etc.), we don’t recommend direct exposure to weather conditions, since they can alter the sample’s features through weathering.

Predicting plastic duration has always been a subject of discussion. However, we estimate a lifespan of over 10 years if the boxes are stored properly (in sheds with compartments for each box and cover to avoid weather exposure). If the boxes are stacked one over the other for a long period, they are expected to last shorter (about 5 years), mainly on the base of the stack (the first two cases) where the pressure exerted is heavier and there may be some disruption and/or cracks in the corners of the boxes. This process should be accelerated if the boxes are exposed to the sun without UV stabilizer in its composition.

Is there any trial/test performed regarding the deformation of the boxes (full load) during the course of time? Is there any risk of deformation/lateral extension of the walls? This is important for deposits in shelves with measures tailored for the boxes.

Yes, there have been several tests and simulations (tensile, bending, tension, impact and hardness) that focused on the storage and stacking, strength and durability of plastic boxes. However, when it comes to durability, it is always difficult to predict, depending largely on the company's culture/user regarding the utilization. You should be aware that the boxes can not be handled by the tabs or any way, nor thrown into the vehicle bucket without any care.

Although nowadays it is possible to make almost anything out of plastic, if the plate holder had with the socket placed from top to bottom, there would be a great technical implication in the mold’s manufacture, due to the direction of the part’s extraction. Not that it is impossible to be done, in fact there is a possibility. However, that would imply a higher investment in tooling (molds), and possibly weaken the structure of the mold and require a higher injection during the manufacture, due not only to the size of the mold, but the weight as well. Therefore, for technical and economic reasons we chose to do the door-plate in this way. To address the possibility of a falling platelet, we suggest the use of metal fasteners (rivets) or high performance adhesive (Araldite, for example). Another alternative would be the making of high-tack adhesive for entering data and customized according to user needs.

Plastic boxes are wavy aiming to distribute the weight of the boxes evenly when they are stacked, thus contributing for the strength and durability of the boxes. Moreover, the fact that the partitions are corrugated facilitates grip for removing the core during measurement activities, description and sampling.
